A software engineer employed by a technology vendor who works embedded with a customer, often on site, to adapt and deploy the vendor's platform for that customer's workflows and data, combining engineering with consulting and product feedback. In the AI industry, forward deployed engineers connect modelsmodel API, n.: A web service through which programs send requests to an AI model run by a company and receive its answers, usually paying per use instead of running the model themselves. and agentsAI agent, n.: An AI system that does not just answer but acts: given a goal, it decides on steps, uses tools such as a browser or code editor, checks the results and keeps going until the job is done. to customers' systems, build retrievalretrieval-augmented generation, n.: Giving an AI an open-book exam: before answering, it looks up relevant passages in a set of documents and bases its reply on them, often citing where each point came from. over their data, write evaluations for their use cases, and carry lessons back to the vendor's product and research teams. The model trades the scalability of self-serve software for faster adoption and close knowledge of customer needs, and it responds to the gap between impressive AI demonstrations and dependable production use in large organizations.
