OpenReview
In plain wordsA website where conference papers are submitted and peer reviewed; for some conferences, anyone can read the reviews and the authors' replies.
A web platform for submitting, reviewing and discussing scientific papers, used by most major machine learningmachine learning, n.: A way of building software that learns from examples instead of following rules written by a programmer. Shown thousands of labeled photos, for instance, a program can learn to recognize cats. venues, including ICLRICLR, prop. n.: A major deep-learning conference, held every spring since 2013, where the reviews of each submitted paper are posted online for anyone to read., NeurIPSNeurIPS, prop. n.: The largest yearly scientific conference on artificial intelligence and machine learning, held each December, where many of the field's landmark papers were first presented., ICMLICML, prop. n.: A leading machine learning conference, first held as a workshop in 1980, where researchers gather each summer to present new learning methods and theory., the Conference on Language Modeling, ACL Rolling Review and the journal Transactions on Machine Learning Research. Each venue configures its own workflow: whether reviewing is single- or double-blind, who may read submissions, reviews and rebuttals, and whether the public may comment. ICLR's fully public process made the platform synonymous with open peer review, and its archives are widely used to study reviewing quality, bias and, recently, AI-written reviews. In November 2025 a flaw in its programming interface briefly let outsiders retrieve the hidden identities of reviewers and authors, prompting venues to change procedures.
The rebuttal period opens on OpenReview next Monday.
Origin
Created by Andrew McCallum's Information Extraction and Synthesis Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; its first major user was the inaugural ICLRICLR, prop. n.: A major deep-learning conference, held every spring since 2013, where the reviews of each submitted paper are posted online for anyone to read. in 2013. It has since been run as a nonprofit project serving hundreds of venues.
